Small antique Continental oil painting portrait study of bearded gentleman attributed to Pieter Jan Brandl (2 of 2). Continental School, German/Czech, 18th Century. Actual portrait is unsigned but attributed to Pieter Jan Brandl (1668-1735/39). There is some provenance on reverse of the second in the pair as follows: "Peter Brandel, German C18, Pieter Jan Brandl". "A leading Baroque painter in Bohemia, Petr Jan Brandl employed strong chiaroscuro and created emotional and energetic works that are characterized by a powerful, passionate movement of colors and dramatic tension as well as a distinct tenderness. His more than 60 paintings and numerous drawings are scattered throughout Bohemia from Chyše to Hradec Králové, Prague to Litoměřice, and Kutná Hora to Kuks, among other places. Prague’s National Gallery even has an entire hall dotted with his paintings, including his famous “Simeon with the Baby Jesus.” Oil on panel. Elaborate gilt gesso frame. Size of frame: 9.25 x 8.75 inches; Size of portrait: 5 x 4.5 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 4.5 x 4 inches. Weight: 474g (allow up to 3 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and some knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly.
