Some provenance on reverse of the sitter: "David Black, born at Dysart 1817, Died at Brighton 1893. His Posthumous portrait was painted in 1903". He was actually an artist himself.
Oil on canvas. Gilt gesso frame.

Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, craquelure and lots of knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character.
