A bit about the artist:

"Mary Seton Watts (1849–1938) was active as an artist and designer mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Here’s a more detailed timeline of her creative life:

🎨 1870s–1880s:

Mary began painting and exhibiting after studying at the South Kensington School of Art (now part of the Royal College of Art). She met George Frederic Watts during this time and became involved in the Symbolist and Arts and Crafts movements.

πŸ›οΈ 1890s:

Her focus shifted from painting to design and craft. She led the creation of the Watts Chapel (1895–1904) in Compton, Surrey, which she designed and decorated with local villagers β€” a celebrated example of the Arts and Crafts style.

🌿 1900s–1930s:

She continued to design in pottery, plasterwork, and decorative arts through the Compton Pottery, which she founded to provide local employment and promote art in daily life.

So while she did paint in her early career (1870s–1880s), Mary Seton Watts is best remembered today for her decorative design work, especially the Watts Chapel and her contribution to the Arts and Crafts movement rather than for traditional painting."
