Antique Continental oil painting portrait study girl surprising her sweetheart (1 of 2)
Antique Continental oil painting portrait study girl surprising her sweetheart (1 of 2).
Continental School, circa 1850-90.
Possibly Swiss, Austrian or German.
Unsigned, artist unknown.
Oil on tin. Elaborate gilt gesso frame (there is a maker's name on reverse, in Swansea, Wales, but the portrait is Continental).
Size of frame: 13 x 11.75 inches;
Size of tin panel: 7.75 x 6.75 inches;
Size of front portrait aperture: 7.25 x 6.25 inches.
Weight: 1.14 kg (allow 5 kg volumetric weight once packed).
Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and some knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character.
Priced accordingly.
A little note about shipping:
This beautiful piece is very old, and its gesso plaster frame is naturally rather delicate. We will pack it with the utmost care to help it reach you safely. That said, it’s possible that fragments of plaster may loosen in transit — this is quite normal for antique frames of this kind. By purchasing, you’re accepting this small risk when shipping by courier. Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds or returns for losses of gesso that may occur in delivery.
