£1,950.00
Antique Victorian oil painting of child asleep in schoolroom signed WH Weatherhead 1878. English, dated 1878. Signed by the artist, William Harris Weatherhead (1843-1903). "Weatherhead was a British, London–based watercolorist who began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1862. His subject matter was genre images – story-telling images of humans in period dress within room interiors—often seated beside a window that illuminates the figure. From 1862 he kept a careful log of every painting he produced, including title, size, and medium (either watercolour or oil), hours spend, cost of materials and other brief notes about the picture" (Wikipedia). Depicts a child asleep in a schoolroom with the teacher holding cane leaning over her desk. Size: 28 x 20 inches. Weight: 1.3 kg (allow up to 15 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and scuffs but all part of its charm and character. It appears to have been remounted onto a new stretcher at some point in its life. Priced accordingly. This painting is quite sombre and melancholy and, although photographed in daylight, please understand that it is quite dark in reality.
