Large antique oil painting portrait study of a sailor smoking clay pipe. English School, circa 1840-80. Unsigned, artist unknown. Oil on canvas, remounted onto new canvas backing. Elaborate gilt gesso frame (more modern). Depicts a bearded sailor in hat, smoking a clay pipe. Size of frame: 28.5 x 24 inches; Size of canvas: 23.5 x 18.5 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 23 x 18.25 inches. Weight: almost 4 kg (allow up to 10 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, craquelure and some knocks to gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly.
