Large antique oil painting portrait of The 3rd Earl Nelson
£3,500.00
Large antique oil painting portrait of The 3rd Earl Nelson. English School, circa 1890-1900. Provenance on front plaque and label on reverse (both as shown in photos). Unsigned, artist unknown. Oil on canvas. Elaborate gilt gesso frame. Depicts a gentleman in formal attire - The 3rd Earl Nelson. A bit about the Earl: "Horatio Nelson, 3rd Earl Nelson, DL (7 August 1823 – 25 February 1913), was a British politician. He was the son of Thomas Bolton (a nephew of Vice Admiral The 1st Viscount Nelson) by his wife Frances Elizabeth Eyre. On 28 February 1835 his father inherited the title Earl Nelson from William Nelson, 1st Earl Nelson and adopted the surname of Nelson. He died on 1 November that year, and his son Horatio succeeded to the title and the estate, Trafalgar House in Wiltshire." Size of frame: 33.5 x 29.5 inches; Size of canvas: 24 x 20.25 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 23.75 x 19.5 inches. Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks and scratches, craquelure and lots of knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame. Priced accordingly. Collection highly recommended from Brockley, London SE4 or you are welcome to arrange your own courier within the UK. Please note that any collection/delivery will be at the buyer's own risk and expense. Please note this item will NOT be packed up so please arrange for a courier that does not require it to be packed up. Please do not arrange for a commercial courier to collect as they will refuse to take it if it is not packed up. We do travel about in the UK from time to time so do ask if we are able to deliver for a small fee in the near (or not too distant!) future - perhaps a long shot but worth a try. Serious overseas buyers - please ask for a courier quote (we will probably have to use Pack & Send or Mailboxes for such a large item and it will be expensive eg probably somewhere between £500 and £1000 at a guess). We have therefore stated a nominal figure of £1,000 for shipping on the listing but this will obviously be different for different countries so please ask for a quote for your country before buying - many thanks! This item is very large and/or delicate and it is therefore recommended that it be collected from Brockley, London SE4, and is offered on this basis. It may, however, be possible for us to use a courier service to pack and send, albeit always at the buyer’s risk and expense. At this point, we cannot accurately estimate how much that would cost. Etsy, however, require a specific courier quote on the listing and therefore a notional amount has been quoted – although necessarily pitched at high amount. Rest assured, I will only charge a buyer the courier expenses at cost, as per my usual policy. Therefore, if you are serious about this item, and would like a quote (bearing in mind it won’t be cheap), then you are welcome to enquire (and please state where you are based).
