Large antique Georgian/early Victorian oil painting portrait of man writing by candlelight

£7,500.00

Antique large Georgian/early Victorian oil painting portrait of man writing by candlelight (attributed to Petrus Van Schendel). French, circa 1800-1840. Unsigned, artist unknown, but after Georges de la Tour. There is a paper label on the back which ascribes this to 'C Horton' (although I have subsequently been informed that it is attributed to Petrus Van Schendel). Oil on canvas. Ornate gilt gesso frame. Size of frame: 33 x 29 inches. Size of canvas: 26 x 22 inches. Weight: 4.75 kg (allow 10 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and one small area of damage to canvas, with a small repair on the reverse but overall fine and all part of its character. Priced accordingly. A beautiful painting. This item is obviously delicate and the gesso frame fragile. Therefore, whilst every care will be taken to pack this item extremely well, I cannot guarantee that some pieces of plaster will not become fragmented and dislodged. Please understand this before committing to buy and it will need to be understood that the item cannot be returned for this reason.

This item is very large and/or delicate and it is therefore recommended that it be collected from Brockley, London SE4, and is offered on this basis. It may, however, be possible for us to use a courier service to pack and send, albeit always at the buyer’s risk and expense.
