Large antique coastal landscape oil painting in ornate gesso frame signed E Maybery. English, circa 1900. Signed by the artist, Edgar James Maybery, born in Newport in 1887 and studied at what later became Newport College of Art. He painted local scenes throughout the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The style of the painting suggests it is an early example, ie before 1920. For more details, see opinion from Newport Museum and Art Gallery (sorry not photographed but will be sent with painting). Oil on canvas. Ornate gilt gesso frame. Depicts a village river inlet scene with thatched cottages and church at sunset. Size of frame: 29 x 25 inches. Size of canvas: 24.25 x 18 inches. Size of front aperture: 21.25 x 17.5 inches. Weight: almost 4 kg (allow 10 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and some minor knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. This item is obviously delicate and the gesso frame fragile. Therefore, whilst every care will be taken to pack this item extremely well, I cannot guarantee that some pieces of plaster will not become fragmented and dislodged. Please understand this before committing to buy and it will need to be understood that the item cannot be returned for this reason.
