Antique Victorian print of a mother and sons with baskets (2 of 2).
English, circa 1880-90.
Victorian print in gilt gesso frame.
Genre: Sentimental realism or domestic morality.
The boys both appear to be crying but we can't work out exactly why - some ideas are:
"The boy wiping his eyes seems remorseful — he’s probably being sent out to make amends, or he’s just confessed something.
The woman’s posture isn’t harsh or angry — it’s firm but tender. She might be:
• Giving him money or food to return something he took or to help a poorer neighbour as penance.
• Or sending him on an errand that frightens or embarrasses him (common in Victorian lessons about courage and duty).
The second boy at the doorway could be taunting him, heightening his distress."
Size of frame: 13.5 x 11.75 inches;
Size of back of print: 8.75 x 7 inches;
Size of front print aperture: 8.25 x 6.25 inches.
Weight: 903g (allow 3 kg volumetric weight once packed).
Condition commensurate with age - lots of knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character.
Priced accordingly.
Best described as shabby chic.
A little note about shipping:
This beautiful piece is very old, and its gesso plaster frame is naturally rather delicate. We will pack it with the utmost care to help it reach you safely. That said, it’s possible that fragments of plaster may loosen in transit — this is quite normal for antique frames of this kind. By purchasing, you’re accepting this small risk when shipping by courier. Unfortunately, I’m not able to offer refunds or returns for losses of gesso that may occur in delivery.
