Antique Victorian oil painting portrait study of Columbus at convent gates. English School, circa 1840-80. Unsigned, artist unknown. Oil on board. Elaborate gilt gesso frame. Depicts Columbus and child asking for bread and water at convent gates and being served by nuns. See provenance and label on reverse. Size of frame: 18.75 x 16 inches; Size of portrait: 15 x 12.25 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 13 x 10 inches. Weight: 2.1 kg (allow 5 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and some knocks to and minor pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. This item is obviously delicate and the gesso frame fragile. Therefore, whilst every care will be taken to pack this item extremely well, I cannot guarantee that some pieces of plaster will not become fragmented and dislodged.
