£650.00
Antique Victorian marine seascape oil painting of sailing boats in heavy weather by Ralph Ruben Stubbs. English, circa 1820-1879. Unsigned but attributed to Ralph Ruben Stubbs (c 1820-1879) - print out attached which reads as follows: "Ralph Ruben Stubbs, c1820-1879, was a Yorkshire artist, who lived in Hull. He specialised in marines and shipping oils, but his exhibition records also show that he painted landscapes, probably scenes in Yorkshire. He exhibited 3 works at the Royal Academy, 2 at the British Institution and 10 at Suffolk Street, including "Mouth of the Humber", "Woodland Scene" and "Off Robin Hood's Bay". He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood" etc etc. Oil on canvas. Elaborate (but distressed) gilt gesso frame. Size of frame: 21.25 x 14.5 inches; Size of canvas: 18.75 x 12 inches. Size of front painting aperture: 18 x 11.5 inches. Weight: almost 1 kg (allow 5 kg volumetric weight once packed). Tatty condition, commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, some paint loss and damage to canvas with several repairs to reverse and lots of knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. Best described as shabby chic or faded grandeur. This is from my personal collection - it has been hanging in my dining room for donkeys years but I have (reluctantly) now decided to part with it. A beautiful thing but perhaps not for the pristine amongst us.
