Antique Scottish townscape oil painting study of Low Calton Regent Arch by Nisbet

£650.00
Antique Scottish townscape oil painting study of Low Calton Regent Arch by Nisbet. Scottish, circa 1880-1900. Oil on canvas. Elaborate gilt gesso frame. The actual painting is unsigned but the artist's name is on frame: "Nisbet RSA - Low Calton, Regent Arch". It is highly likely that Nisbet is the Scottish painter, Robert Buchan Nisbet RSA RSW (1857-1942). "Nisbet was born in Edinburgh, the son of a house painter, he worked at first in a shipping office before turning to art around 1880. he joined his older brother, also a well listed artist, Pollok Sinclair Nisbet, in Venice c. 1881 before enrolling at the RSA schools 1882-1885. He later studied in Paris under Bouguereau. For a short period he painted in oil, but soon gave this up to paint solely in watercolour, in which he was influenced by the broad styles of de Wint and Cox. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of painters in watercolour in 1887 and became a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1902. In The Dictionary of Scottish Painters, Halsby and Harris submit that “his best works are his smaller landscapes in which he achieved rich, sonorous tones and great sense of light.” Halsby likens Nisbet’s work to that of the Borders artist Tom Scott who was also a fantastic watercolourist". Depicts Low Calton, Regent Arch, Edinburgh, Scotland - "Low Calton Regent Arch" also on frame. Size of frame: 15.25 x 13.25 inches; Size of canvas: 12 x 10 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 7.75 x 5.75 inches. Weight: 2.2 kg (allow up to 7 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches and some knocks to and pieces missing from the beading on the edge of the gesso frame. There is also a stretcher on the reverse of the canvas but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. A beautiful painting.
