Antique river landscape oil painting signed E W Appleby 1881. Ernest W. APPLEBY (1862-1909), English. Signed by the artist and dated 1881. Oil on canvas. Gilt gesso frame. Depicts figures in woods on riverbank and cottage on far bank. Size of frame: 15 x 13.5 inches. Size of canvas: 8 x 6 inches. Weight: 1.7 kg (allow 4.5 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, some paint loss to canvas, loss of gilt to one side of inner frame and some knocks to and pieces missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. This item is obviously delicate and the gesso frame fragile. Therefore, whilst every care will be taken to pack this item extremely well, I cannot guarantee that some pieces of plaster will not become fragmented and dislodged. Please understand this before committing to buy and it will need to be understood that the item cannot be returned for this reason. Best described as Faded Grandeur or Shabby Chic but nevertheless a beautiful thing. The record at auction for Ernest W. Appleby is £4,200 (equivalent to approximately US $5,510).
