Antique Georgian early Victorian oil painting study of the Briton's Arms, Elm Hill, Norwich, England. English School, circa 1800-40. Signed by the artist (a French artist but an English scene). Provenance on reverse of canvas as follows: "A piece of Old Norwich known as Elm Hill". It features the Briton's Arms with courtyard and water pump at the top of Elm Hill and the church in the background. Oil on canvas. Elaborate gilt gesso frame. Size of gilt frame: 25.5 x 20 inches. Size of canvas: 20.5 x 14 inches; Size of painting aperture: 16 x 11 inches. Weight: 2.6 kg (allow 8 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, various knocks and pieces missing to gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. Priced accordingly. Best described as shabby chic or faded grandeur. A real piece of Norwich history - worthy of a museum.
