Antique French oil painting portrait of senior lady in black dress and bonnet. French School, circa 1800-20. Unsigned, artist unknown. Provenance on reverse: "M de Tamals Tesla" - thought to be the sitter rather than the artist. Oil on canvas, laid on board. Elaborate gilt gesso frame (distressed). Depicts a senior lady in black dress and bonnet. Size of frame: 22 x 18.5 inches; Size of canvas: 16.5 x 13.5 inches; Size of front portrait aperture: 15.5 x 12.5 inches. Weight: 2.1 kg (allow 6 kg volumetric weight once packed). Condition commensurate with age - various superficial marks & scratches, significant craquelure, flaking and lots of knocks to and pieces of plaster missing from gesso frame but all part of its charm and character. The antique wood of this item has had a minor woodworm infestation at some point in its long life. However, this has now been specially treated to eradicate. Priced accordingly. This frame is extremely delicate and vulnerable to damage in transit, even with good packing. On this occasion, therefore, the painting is offered for sale alone and the frame does not form part of the price. The frame will, however, be included in the purchase for free. That is to say, if you are purchasing this item, then it is on the understanding that it is the painting alone and the frame will be included as a gift (and therefore accepting any and all responsibility for damage in transit).
